When building a retaining wall, proper drainage is imperative to structural integrity. Hydrostatic pressure accumulates against below grade structures due to impermeable soil layers. Extended pressures can also build up during the winter months when water freezes and adds more even pressure to the wall. This can cause leaks and wall failures that require expensive repairs and/or maintenance. When proper drainage is unavailable, the wall must be designed to handle heavier loads, resulting in higher cost to build. If stone is used to provide drainage, only low drainage flow is available and over time, the stone will be clogged with soil fines.
