The open area for water collection in prefabricated drains is 65-80% vs. 3-5% in perforated pipe. This allows for faster and higher volume water collection in below grade applications, making prefabricated drains a better and more efficient solution for sub-surface drainage applications.
REDUCED CLOGGING:
Filter fabrics permit high volume water entry while retaining fine soil particles. Filtration properties combined with a large percentage of open area for water collection reduce clogging and the possibility of drainage failure.
PREDICTABLE PERFORMANCE:
Prefabricated drains are engineered to meet uniform and independently verified performance characteristics insuring predictable field performance.
CHEMICAL RESISTANT:
Prefabricated drain core and filter fabrics are resistant to all naturally occurring soil properties. Additional product choices are available for unique chemical conditions.

Crush strength of core resists damage during installation. High tear and puncture strength of fabric ensures no damage during normal backfill conditions.

OPEN AREA:
Strip Drain has over 65% open space for water collection versus perforated pipes which have a 3-5 % open area. Larger open area means strip drains can collect water faster and more effieciently in subsurface applications. 

COST EFFECTIVE:
Perforated pipes require stone backfill to protect the pipe and provide a storage area for collected water to gather based on limited open area.  Strip drains inherent strength and large open area  eliminate the need for stone or select backfill. Strip Drains require fewer materials, reduce labor costs and save hauling or transport material costs.

EASE OF INSTALLATION:
Strip drains are lightweight, easy to handle and install.  Reduced excavation and slope requirements make strip drains simple to use. Only a 2-4 inch trench is required for most installations.

MOLDED CORE

STRENGTH:
The polymeric dimpled core functions as a pipe and creates a flow channel for collected water. Designed with compressive strengths ranging from 6000 psf - 9000 psf, AWD strip drains can easily withstand the load demands from soil or other surface pressures.
 
FLOW:
The core height for strip drains are 1.0 inch and determines the amount of water that can be collected and transported. Perforations on the back side of the core allow water to enter the drain from all sides. The flow capacity of the core ranges from 21 - 50 gallons per minute per foot based on the hydraulic gradient (0.1 or 1.0). Strip drain products are manufactured in 6"-12"-18"-24" & 36" widths allowing design flexibility based on anticipated flow design requirements.
 

FILTER FABRIC

 
The filter fabric prevents the intrusion of soil particles into the drainage core. The geosynthetic filter fabric provides a large open area for water collection, creating a more efficient means of water collection for sub-surface drainage applications. Water can quickly enter the drainage core with reduced clogging. The fabric is securely bonded to each dimple of the polymeric core to prevent soil intrusion. 
 
AWD Strip Drains are constructed with a wide range of filter fabrics choices to address the most challenging soil conditions. AWD strip drain are available with filter fabrics meeting AASHTO M 288-06 specifications for geotextile classification for survivability from installation stresses in subsurface drainage applications.
