ADVANTAGES-PREFABRICATED DRAINS

LOW INSTALLED COST:
Combined installation and material cost is typically less than half the cost of aggregated drains.
EASY TO HANDLE AND INSTALL:
Lightweight (less than 5 oz / sf), easy to handle sheet drain is placed easily and quickly. No heavy equipment or skilled labor required. Inexpensive to store and transport.
HIGH FLOW CAPACITY:
By design, the flow capacity of thin, lightweight prefabricated drains far exceed that of several feet of stone.
REDUCED EXCAVATION:
Core thickness ranges from 1/4” – 1” and reduce the amount of excavation required to install aggregate systems.
SUPERIOR COLLECTION CAPACITY:
The open area for water collection in prefabricated drains is 65-80% vs. 3-5% in perforated pipe. This allows for faster and higher volume water collection in below grade applications, making prefabricated drains a better and more efficient solution for sub-surface drainage applications.
REDUCED CLOGGING:
Filter fabrics permit high volume water entry while retaining fine soil particles. Filtration properties combined with a large percentage of open area for water collection reduce clogging and the possibility of drainage failure.
PREDICTABLE PERFORMANCE:
Prefabricated drains are engineered to meet uniform and independently verified performance characteristics insuring predictable field performance.
HOLDS REINFORCED SHOTCRETE:
Formed core provides good surface adhesion for shotcrete and other construction materials.
ENHANCES WATERPROOFING:
Polymeric core is impervious to water. Water seepage to structural is minimized and provides extended life expectancy of waterproofing membranes.
CHEMICAL RESISTANT:
Prefabricated drain core and filter fabrics are resistant to all naturally occurring soil properties. Additional product choices are available for unique chemical conditions.
STRONG & DURABLE:
Crush strength of core resists damage during installation. High tear and puncture strength of fabric ensures no damage during normal backfill conditions.
SIMPLE INSPECTION:
Visual inspection of material an installation is easy and less time consuming.
 
 

 

 

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

 

 
COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH: Core strength is matched to soil and other loading. AWD provides sheet drains with compressive strengths from 5,200 to 45,000 pounds per square foot. Basic design recommendations:
5,200 psf - vertical depths to 10'.  
9,000 psf - vertical depths to 20'.
15,000 psf - vertical depths to 100'. 
18,000 – 45,000 psf - horizontal applications based design load requirements.
 
FLOW CAPACITY: Core thickness determines product flow capacity. AWD offers three primary drainage cores. Flow rates are calculated in gallons per minute per LF.
0.25" (6.35 mm) core - maximum flow capacity of 13 gpm
0.44” (11.0 mm) core - maximum flow capacity of 22 gpm 
1.0"   (25.0 mm) core - maximum flow capacity of 80 gpm
 
SINGLE OR DOUBLE SIDE WATER ENTRY: AWD offers a full line of solid and perforated core sheet drain products for applications that require water collection from both sides.
 
FILTRATION: Non-woven filter fabrics, needle-punched and / or spun-bonded, provide adequate filtration in most construction drainage applications.  Woven monofilament filter fabric provides superior strength and filtration for concrete pours and organic soil applications and is recommended for select horizontal applications. AWD provides a wide range of prefabricated drains with filter fabrics meeting AASHTO M 288-06 geotextile Class specifications for subsurface drainage.
 
CHEMICAL RESISTANCE: Special polymeric core materials are available where soil or other drainage environments require added chemical resistance.
 
PROTECTION:  Prefabricated drains also acts as protection course thereby serving two purposes - drainage and protection. Additional backing materials can be applied to acheive additional protection for specific applications.

MOLDED CORE
 

STRENGTH:

The sheet drain polymeric dimpled and perforated core functions as a pipe and creates a flow channel for collected water and provides strength to withstand load demands from soil or other surface pressure. Compressive strengths range from 9,000 lbs/sq ft to 45,000 lbs/sq ft.

 

FLOW: 

The core height ranges from 0.25 inches to 0.44 inches. The core height determines the amount of water that can be transported. The flow capacity of the sheet core products ranges from 9-22 gallons per minute for every foot of product width.  Several feel of stone would be required to duplicate the flow capacity produced from these low profile cores.
 

PROTECTION:

The dimpled core also acts as a protection course for structural applications.

 
FILTER FABRIC
 

The filter fabric prevents the intrusion of soil particles into the drainage core. The geosynthetic filter fabric provides a large open area for water collection, creating a more efficient means of water collection for sub-surface drainage applications. Water can quickly enter the drainage core with reduced clogging. The fabric is securely bonded to each dimple of the polymeric core to prevent soil intrusion. 

 

AWD Sheet Drains are constructed with a wide range of filter fabrics choices to address the most challenging soil conditions. AWD sheet drains are available with filter fabrics meeting AASHTO M 288-06 specification for geotextile survivability classifications from installation stresses in subsurface drainage applications.

 

The core height ranges from 0.25 inches to 0.44 inches which determines the amount of water that can be collected and transported. The flow capacity of the core ranges from 9 to 21 gpm per ft of width which is equivalent to the flow rate found in 4-8 feet of drainage stone.
