Project Overview

A nuclear energy plant in South Carolina needed to reinforce a slope by utilizing a soil nail and shotcrete wall system. This also created an emergency flood spillway for that area of the plant. AWD’s Technical Support Engineering group collaborated with CB&I to design the drainage system behind the shotcrete wall and in between the soil nails to help collect the subsurface water. AWD’s SITEDRAIN Chimney Drain strips were utilized vertically along the slope of the wall, while the HQ Combination Drain System was used to help transport water horizontally at the base of the slope. AWD’s Geo-Outlet Fittings were used at the weep-hole locations to help discharge the water, while not impeding the chimney drain strips continuing down the slope.

The result was a highly functioning sub-drainage system behind the shotcrete face to ensure the spillway does not start to crack or fail due to excess water or poorly drained soils. The SITEDRAIN material was sold by Ferguson Waterworks and installed by CA Murren in April of 2016.
